Mandatory budget deadlines are looming, and Gila County Finance Director John Nelson is hard at work preparing a preliminary budget for the Board of Supervisors to consider at its June 26 meeting.
"The preliminary budget merely sets the upper limits of spending," Nelson said. A tentative budget must be adopted by the third Monday in July.
"The tentative budget is then published two consecutive times and then a call for a public hearing is issued to allow citizens to provide input," Nelson said.
The final budget, covering the 2001-02 fiscal year beginning July 1, must be adopted no later than the second Monday in August.
Nelson said he would not be surprised to see the budget tabled at the June 26 meeting so new District 2 Supervisor Joe Sanchez can have more time to familiarize himself with the issues. Sanchez, previously mayor of Miami, was sworn in June 12 to complete the term of Edward "Bunch" Guerrero who died April 28.
