If Payson is to play host to the Grand Canyon Games state games wrestling competition for a second straight year, changes will be made, PHS head coach Dave LaMotte said.
The single biggest change that the Payson coach would like to see is an alteration of the rules from Greco/Roman and freestyle to folk-style or high school. That change, LaMotte said, would simplify the tournament for officials, coaches and the participants.
Also, the coach would like to broaden the appeal and better publicize the wrestling games to help draw more participants.
When the event was held for the first time in Payson, last summer, only about 100 wrestlers showed up.
"It was a small tournament," LaMotte said.
The wrestling events are currently conducted as a part of the Tucson Grand Canyon Games rather than the Phoenix games, which will be held this weekend. Switching the wrestling to the larger Phoenix games might help draw more young wrestlers.
If those changes can be made, LaMotte said, he and his Payson High School coaching staff would agree to again host the games.
