Crews Rescue 10-Year-Old From Canyon

The Tonto Rim Search and Rescue squad was called into action at 12:30 p.m. Saturday to evacuate a 10-year-old boy with a head injury from Box Canyon off Highway 260.

The boy, Brian Cahill of Chandler, was climbing on a ledge when he slipped and fell 10 feet, Gila County Sheriff's Sergeant Terry Hudgens said. "I got two stories about what happened one that he jumped and one that he slipped," the sergeant said.

The boy landed on his feet, but tipped forward and hit his head. Bystanders moved the boy to a shady spot, immobilized him and used a cell phone to call 9-1-1.

Hudgens four-wheeled to the canyon's edge, and then called in the Tonto Rim rope team. "They had to string together about 500 feet of rope and then rappel the last 15 feet," Hudgens said.

Chris Christy, a Tonto Rim Search and Rescue EMT, treated the boy, who was then carried out by stretcher and transported to Payson Regional Medical Center where he was treated for minor injuries and released.
