High school soccer players can get a jump start on the season by participating in a training camp, newly appointed Longhorn coach Roger Wholly said.
Hosted by Prescott Yavapai soccer coaches Hugh Bell and Mike Pantaloine, the camp is July 23 through July 26 on the Rumsey Park multipurpose field.
The Yavapai coaches are two of those most highly regarded junior college coaches in the West, longtime local youth soccer coach Penny Navis-Schmidt said.
During the camp sessions, which will last from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., coaches will stress skill improvement, game strategy, rules of the sport and physical conditioning.
The camp is open to high-school-age boys including those who graduated with last spring's eighth grade class. The fee is $120 per camper, which includes camp T-shirt, water bottle and soccer ball.
Coaches are hoping about 30 fledgling players participate in the camp. A coaching clinic is also on the agenda, set for 7 to 9 p.m. July 25 at Rumsey Park. Wholly has indicated he will attend and says he hopes all local youth coaches take advantage of the clinic. The cost is $25.
