At the conclusion of each prep wrestling season, coaches gather to nominate and select the athletes they believe deserve to participate in the Arizona Coaches Association Red vs. Blue All-Star clash.
Being chosen is a highlight of any high school senior's career.
Among those chosen to participate in the 2001 edition of the celestial match, held Feb. 24, at Casa Grande High School, were former Longhorn standouts Rocky Beery and Caleb Miller.
Competing on the Blue team, the 171-pound Beery took an 8-2 decision over Holbrook's Jared Nelson. During the regular season, the pair split their head-to-head meetings. Nelson was selected an all-star after compiling a 30-7 record and finishing third in the state tournament. Beery, who was 30-2 last season, was the 3A state champion.
Beery and Nelson did not meet in the state tournament after the Holbrook grappler lost in the semifinal round.
As a member of the Red team, Miller lost on a fall to Mike Sabin of Moon Valley. Sabin entered the match with a 40-5 record and a fifth-place state finish in the Class 4A ranks. Miller, the 3A 152-pound champion, compiled a 28-2 record the past season.
