Tonto Apaches Champs Of Grand Canyon State Games

Despite having only 12 athletes entered, the Tonto Apache Track and Field team ran, jumped and threw its way to the championship of the Grand Canyon State Winter Games Saturday at Tolleson High School.

With 180 points, the Tonto Apaches easily outdistanced the runner-up Phoenix Bobcats who finished with 96.

Tonto Apache coach Billy Joe Winchester said that if his team was at full strength, "we could have broke the 200 point mark."

Some track team members could not participate, Winchester said "because there are so many other (youth) activities going on."

The team which last fall was named the Grand Canyon State Games Male and Female Athletes of the year is slated to return to action March 17.

Also on the agenda is a possible visit to the Las Vegas Invitational March 24 and 25.
