Wesley G. Backes, 76, of Payson, died March 6, 2001, in Payson. He was born May 18, 1924, in Aurora, Ill.
Mr. Backes and his wife, Sara, would have celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary on March 8. He served in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant and was awarded the bronze star during World War II.
Mr. Backes retired from the carpenter shop at Arizona State University in 1985. He was a member of Mount Cross Lutheran Church, and he served as caretaker at Rock Point Lutheran Mission from 1972 to 1973. He also was the post commander of VFW Post 1197 in Batavia, Ill.
Survivors include his wife, Sara A. Backes, of Payson; one son, Bill Backes of Payson; two daughters, Cindy Backes of Clarendon Hills, Ill. and Cherry Backes of Houston, Texas; six grandchildren, Sara Wyatt of Sycamore, Ill., Lisa Karl of Aurora, Ill., Tim Betsinger of Elgin, Ill., Amy Gresko of Tempe, Ariz., Michele Willis of Houston, Texas and Michael Hileman of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Flora Backes, father, Ben Backes and brother, Bill Backes.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 17 at Mount Cross Lutheran Church, 601 E. Highway 260.
