Traffic Delays Expected Along Highway 260

Beginning this week, the transportation of large equipment on Highway 260 may cause 15- to 20-minute traffic delays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

For the next two weeks, the Arizona Department of Transportation will be moving heavy equipment via wide-load transports, which could cause delays between Payson and the Little Green Valley area.

Emergency access will be maintained at all times, and Department of Public Safety officers will be in the area to direct traffic.

Blasting also will take place on Highway 260 in the Preacher Canyon area at milepost 263 for the next few months. During this blasting period, the roadway will be completely closed and the area will be secured.

Traffic will be stopped for intervals of about 15 minutes, reported an ADOT press release.

Nighttime hauling, however, has been completed, and nighttime road restrictions have been lifted.

The Preacher Canyon phase of the road-widening project will take two years to complete. Crews plan to build six bridges, two that will span the canyon and four for wildlife crossings.

Motorists traveling in the area are asked to obey the posted speed limit signs and be alert for construction equipment and workers along the highway. For more information, call ADOT's toll-free community information hotline at (866) 260-4636.
