An Easter egg scramble for children 8 years old and younger will begin at 9 a.m., Saturday, April 14 at the Green Valley Park amphitheater. Children race to collect eggs filled with candy and lots of special prizes. Age groups and times are as follows: Ages infant-2, 9 a.m.; ages 3 & 4, 9:15 a.m.; ages 5 & 6, 9:30 a.m.; ages 7 & 8, 9:45 a.m.; Special needs, 10 a.m. There is no charge for this event, which is co-sponsored by the Payson Elks Club.

5th-6th Grade Boys/Girls Basketball Tournaments

These tournaments are open to all teams, local and out-of-town, that want to participate. Tournament date is Saturday, March 31 for both tournaments. Registration is $100 per team and is limited to the first 12 teams to sign up in both divisions. Registration deadline is Friday, March 23.

Take A Hike!

Trek through the tall pines and ascend up the Mogollon Rim to the "Tunnel to Nowhere" as you look for signs of spring Thursday, April 26. The tunnel, begun in 1883, was intended to bore through the Rim as part of the Arizona Mineral Belt Railroad. The project was abandoned, however, a 70-foot tunnel remains today. The trail is just over three miles round trip and is rated as "moderately difficult. Participants should be in good health and accustomed to physical activity. Hikers must bring their own water and sack lunch for the trail. The fee is $10 per person, which includes transportation and a light snack and beverage at the trailhead after the excursion. The trip is limited to the first 10 registrants. The registration deadline is Friday, April 13.

Lifeguard Training Class

If you're age 15 or older, you can become a certified lifeguard by completing the American Red Cross "Lifeguard Training for the Professional Lifeguard" classes April 30 - May 12. Classes will be held Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Fee for the class includes Lifeguard Training, CPR and First Aid. Registration fee is $50 per person. Participants must register at the Parks and Recreation office by 5 p.m. Friday, April 27. The class is for new lifeguards, or those who need to update their certification.

Water Safety Instructor Course

If you're age 17 or older and have strong swimming skills, enroll in this class May 14 to 26. Classes will be held Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Upon completion, you'll be eligible to teach lessons at Taylor Pool or anywhere American Red Cross lessons are offered. Registration fee is $50 per person. The class is for new instructors, or for those who need to update their certification.

Grab a Pole!

Fishing poles and mini tackle boxes are available at the Parks & Recreation office, 1000 W. Country Club Drive. You must be 18 years and older to check out the fishing poles, but anglers of all ages may use them free of charge. The program is sponsored by the Arizona Game and Fish Department.
