Tonto Apaches Fare Well At Phoenix Meet

Tonto Apache Track and Field team members are focusing their sights on a strong showing at the upcoming Phoenix Invitational competition.

The meet will be held March 31 and April 1 at Glendale Community College.

According to team coach Billy Joe Winchester, six athletes who could not compete in the team's last competition a USA Track and Field event March 17 at Glendale College should be back in the fold for the upcoming invitational.

Those team members include Matt Johnson, Justin Johnson, Cassandra Cly, Anthony Johnson, Chris Engle and Mirle Weisser.

Despite fielding a depleted squad at the USA meet, the Apaches ran, jumped and threw their way to eight gold medals.

One of the highlights of the team's showing there, Winchester said, was Colten Curtis' victory in the intermediate boys discus.

In winning, Curtis outdistanced talented teammate Mike Waterman. It was the first time this season he's done that.

"It was a big upset," Winchester said.
