An Easter egg scramble for children ages 8 and under will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 14 at the Green Valley Park amphitheater. Children race to collect eggs filled with candy and lots of special prizes. Age groups and times are as follows: Ages infant-2, 9 a.m.; ages 3 & 4, 9:15 a.m.; ages 5 & 6, 9:30 a.m.; ages 7 & 8, 9:45 a.m.; special needs, 10 a.m. There is no charge for this event, which is co-sponsored by the Payson Elks Club.

Major League Baseball Skills Competition

This program gives boys and girls ages 7-14 the opportunity to feature their batting, fielding, throwing and base-running abilities. (Age is as of 8/31/01.) The local competition will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Rumsey II (North) Ball Field April 11. There is no charge for this event. All participants must bring their own glove. Local winners advance to sectional competition in May or June. Sectional winners go on to the Arizona Diamondbacks Team Championships in June. Team champions may qualify for the national finals in July at the Major League Baseball All-Star Game.

Take A Hike!

Trek through the tall pines and ascend up the Mogollon Rim to the "Tunnel to Nowhere" as you look for signs of spring Thursday, April 26. The trail is just over three miles round trip and is rated as "moderately difficult." Participants should be in good health and accustomed to physical activity. Hikers must bring their own water and sack lunch for the trail. The fee is $10 per person, which includes transportation and a light snack and beverage at the trailhead after the excursion. This trip is limited to the first 10 registrants. Registration deadline is April 13.

Lifeguard Training Class

If you're age 15 or older, you can become a certified lifeguard by completing the American Red Cross "Lifeguard Training for the Professional Lifeguard" classes April 30 - May 12. Classes will be held Monday - Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. The $50 fee for the class includes Lifeguard Training, CPR and First Aid. Participants must register at Parks and Rec by 5 p.m. April 27. This class is for new lifeguards, or those who need to update their certification.

Water Safety Instructor Course

If you're age 17 or older and have strong swimming skills, enroll in this class May 14 - 26. Classes will be held Monday - Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Upon completion, you'll be eligible to lessons at Taylor Pool or anywhere American Red Cross lessons are offered. Registration fee is $50 per person. This class is for new instructors, or for those who need to update their certification.
