The Payson Humane Society has taken a big step toward building a new animal shelter at an all-new location.
The humane society closed escrow last month on two-thirds of an acre on Longhorn Road nestled between the Pacific Pride gasoline station and Energy West.
"We were looking for land along Main Street," Payson Humane Society President Gloria Scott said, "but the town didn't want us there. They kept trying to get us to move out by the sanitary district."
The Longhorn parcel was the perfect compromise, Scott said, and the society had the funds to buy the lot.
Now comes the hard part, she said. The humane society needs cash donations to start a building fund.
"We are planning an 8,000-square-foot facility about 3,000 square feet bigger than what we have now," she said. "We're looking at a building cost of anywhere from $600,000 to $800,000."
After buying the land, the society still has about $300,000 left, which will be used for building plans, town fees and lot preparation, Scott said.
The humane society will pursue every possible grant, Scott said, but community support is vital to this project.
Payson Humane Society donations are tax deductible, and can be sent to P.O. Box 242, Payson, AZ 85547. For more information about the humane society, stop by the animal shelter at 812 S. McLane Road, or visit the humane society's Web site at http://homepages.about.com/paysonhumanesociety/phs/.
