Saturday, at Blue Ridge High School, Payson Longhorn Sterling White finally broke the Payson High School shot-put record by uncorking a gold-medal throw of 53 feet, 5.75 inches.

The previous record was set by Jon Gunzel, who, in 1995, tossed the shot-put 53 feet, 3 inches.

White's mark in Lakeside came on the heels of a 50-foot throw at the Winslow Invitational held April 27. By winning the East championship with the record-breaking throw, he earned a seed into the state championship today (Friday) and Saturday in Chandler.

White also earned a seed into the state discus finals with a top four finish in Lakeside.

Also representing the Longhorns in the state finals will be Blake Whetten (high jump, 4x400 relay), Chris Donaldson (high jump, 300 hurdles), Jeremy Lee (800 meters, 1,600 meters, 4x400 relay), Geri DeBongnie (4x100 relay), Martin Garcia (4x400 relay), Brandon Peters (4x100 relay, 4x400 relay) and Danny Malloy (4x100 relay).

At the East championships, the Longhorns finished fifth overall with 110 points. Ahead of the Horns were Blue Ridge (239), Snowflake (156), Round Valley (154) and Show Low (119).
