Trio Of Payson Grapplers Compete In Freestyle Meet

Payson High School's new wrestling coach, Dave LaMotte, is making sure his charges have a well-rounded off-season program to help them prepare for the next season.

Many of the fledgling wrestlers are currently participating in USA Wrestling tournaments around the state.

The most recent tournament the Cadet and Junior Arizona State Freestyle Championships May 12 at Deer Valley High School in Phoenix drew three local athletes: George Coleman, Zack Lee and Larry Wilbanks.

Competing in the 209-pound Cadet division, Coleman wrestled his way to a state title.

In the 145-pound Cadet competition, Lee was a third-place finisher.

Wilbanks took eighth place in the 132-pound Junior division.

Night angling

AllStar Bass will be conducting a series of night team bass fishing tournaments during June, July and August.

The series consists of six tournaments held on Roosevelt and Apache lakes.

A season-ending championship will also be held.

Four of the events will be held Saturday evenings from 6 p.m. to midnight and three will be held Saturday evenings from 6 p.m.until Sunday morning at 6 a.m.

The basic entry fee is $150 per team.

Contestants will be awarded points according to their finish at each event. The top 28 teams in the points standings, the winning team of each of the six tournaments, and the team that catches the biggest bass of the tournament season will qualify for the championship.

The tournaments are June 16 (6 p.m. to midnight, Roosevelt), June 23 (6 p.m. to midnight, Roosevelt), July 21-22 (6 p.m. to 6 a.m., Roosevelt), July 28-29 (6 p.m. - 6 a.m., Apache), Aug. 11 (6 p.m. - midnight, Roosevelt), Aug. 18 (6 p.m. - midnight, Apache).

The super team championship will be held 6 p.m. - 6 a.m. Aug. 25 and 26 at Apache Lake.

Get a kick out of it

Yavapai College soccer coaches Mike Pantalione and Hugh Bell will be in the Rim country July 23 to 26 to host a youth soccer camp.

The camp is open to boys entering next year's freshman class to incoming high school seniors.

Sessions will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily on the Rumsey Park soccer field.
