Payson High School wrestling coach Dave LaMotte has brought in a pair of top-notch coaches to assist at the Longhorn Wrestling Camp, May 29, 30 and 31 in Wilson Dome.
On the camp staff will be former NCAA All-American Joe Romero and Sunkist Kids team star Jeff Funicello.
Romero will focus on teaching freestyle wrestling skills at the camp. Funicello is slated to instruct Greco-Roman techniques. LaMotte and assistant coach Doug Eckhardt, a former Longhorn star wrestler, will teach folkstyle (high school) skills. LaMotte says the camp will help prepare high school and junior high school youngsters for the rigors of next year's campaign. For the younger set, the camp will provide the fundamentals every successful wrestler must learn.
The camp, which will run each day from 9 a.m. until noon, is open to youngsters ages 7 and older. The fee is $25 per camper or $35 for a family.
June 2, campers will have the opportunity to test their new skills at the Grand Canyon State Games at the Wilson Dome.
Campers who opt to participate in the GC showdown will have their entry fees paid by the Payson wrestling club.
