A group of high school baseball players will represent the Rim country in the Valley-based Arizona Prep Summer League.

The Payson team, coached by Teddy Pettet, will spring into action at 6 p.m. June 5 in Fountain Hills. Action continues at 6 p.m. June 8 on Payson High field, also against Fountain Hills. Both meetings will be double-headers.

Pettet formed the youth team to give aspiring PHS varsity players the opportunity to fine-tune their diamond skills. Also in the league are teams representing Scottsdale Saguaro, Phoenix Christian, Tempe and Scottsdale Christian.

Diamondbacks prepare

Word out of Phoenix is that Jeff Rodin of the Arizona Diamondbacks is gearing up for the youth baseball camp to be held in Payson July 9 to 13.

A regular Diamondbacks Training Center will be held from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. This week-long camp is for youth 7 to 14 years, and its curriculum is endorsed by the Diamondbacks baseball staff. The curriculum is also matched to the age and skill level of the student.

An advanced camp, for those at least 11 years old who are playing organized baseball or have previously attended a training center, will be held from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Camp instructors, which will include PHS coach Teddy Pettet, are hand-picked by the organization to teach the fundamentals of hitting, fielding, throwing, base running and specific position play.

Registration is $150 and includes a Diamondbacks Training Centers T-shirt, cap, bat bag and two tickets to a D-backs home game.

Both camp sizes are limited and instructor-to-student ratios are monitored for hands-on learning.
