The Payson Parks and Recreation Department provides athletic and entertainment programs for residents year-round, but things really start hoppin' during the summer. The following is a list of the activities lined up for the summer months.
Summer Recreation Center
Youths who have completed grades fourth through tenth will be admitted to the Recreation Center in the Rim Country Middle School gym this summer. The center offers basketball, volleyball, ping-pong, billiards and a variety of other activities. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m, Monday through Friday, June 4 through July 27. No registration is required; admission is free.
National Youth Games
The local competition of the 2001 Junior Goodwill Games will be held Tuesday, June 26 at Rim Country Middle School. Boys and girls ages 8 to 13 will compete in track and field (10 a.m.), basketball (11 a.m.) and swimming (2 p.m. at Taylor Pool). Pre-registration is encouraged. Registration is free.
Crafty Kids Club
Participants will create handmade crafts, including a T-shirt of their own. This two-week class meets at Rumsey Park, Monday through Thursday for the following sessions:
Session 1: June 4-7, June 11-14
9 to 10 a.m moms and children ages 3 to 5
10:15 to noon Ages 6 to 9
Session 2: July 9-12, July 16-19
9 to 10 a.m. moms and children ages 3 to 5
10:15 to noon Ages 10-12
Registration is $25 per child, which includes all project materials. Enrollment is limited to 10 children per class, and will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
Recreational soccer registration for youths who will be ages 4 to 7 by Oct. 31, 2001, will be held July 16-27. The fee is $20 per child and includes a T-shirt and a team pizza party. Games will be played in September and October, and will be held on Saturdays and some weeknights. Late registrants will be placed on teams only if space permits. Due to limited field space, soccer for ages 8-15 is held in the spring.
Summer Youth Camps
Arizona Diamondbacks Baseball: Learn from the pros at Diamondback Baseball Camp July 9-13. Registration is $150 per child and is open to boys and girls ages 7-14. Camp will be held from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. daily at the Payson High School Varsity Baseball Field. Registration forms are available online at http://www.azdiamondbacks.com.
Girls Volleyball Camp
Girls who completed grades 5-8 in 2001 are invited to attend this camp from 8 a.m. to noon June 18 to 21 at the Payson High School dome. Registration will be taken May 21 through June 8 at the Payson Parks and Recreation Office. The fee is $25 per child. Space is limited to the first 50 participants. Co-sponsored by Longhorn Volleyball.
Girls Basketball Camp
Girls ages 8 to 14 are invited to attend. Camp will be held from 8 a.m. to noon at the old high school gym June 11 through June 14. The fee is $30 per child payable at the parks and recreation office. Space is limited to the first 75 participants. Co-sponsored by Longhorn Basketball.
Boys Basketball Camps

The pool opens for the season Saturday, May 26. Daily pool admission for open swim is $1 for youths, or 1.50 per person ages 18 and older. Daily youth passes and a complete listing of Taylor Pool hours, classes and programs are available through the parks and recreation office.
Adult Lap Swim
Rise and shine this summer with the adult lap swim, held weekdays from 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 a.m., beginning June 4 and ending July 27. Registration is $40 per person and begins April 30. Space is limited; don't delay.
Take the plunge and sign up for water aerobics this summer. Classes are held weekdays from 9 a.m. to 9:55 a.m. and 5:30 to 6:25 p.m. Participants pay a $10 registration fee, then $1 each time they attend class. Registration begins April 30; classes begin June 4 and end Aug. 3.
Lessons begin Monday, June 4 and are held in two-week sessions throughout the summer. Registration is $15 per person, per session; or $20 if after the deadline. Class sizes are limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Please note: In order to accommodate as many swimmers as possible, recreation officials ask that you follow the registration periods listed above. No early registrations will be accepted. Late registrants will be accepted as space permits for an additional $5 fee.
The Payson Recreational Swim Team begins practice June 4 and meets Monday through Friday until July 27. Registration will be accepted April 30 through June 1. The fee is $40 per child and includes a T-shirt, a minimum of four recreational swim meets and an end-of-season party. Participants must be at least 5 years old as of June 1, 2001. They also must be able to swim freestyle across the deep end, have basic diving skills and have some competency in the butterfly, back and breast strokes.
This class begins June 18 and will be offered in two sessions: from noon to 1 p.m. or 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The fee is $35 for the entire six-week program. Participants must be capable of swimming unassisted in the deep end of the pool. Class sizes are limited, so sign-up now. Please note: If fewer than eight swimmers enroll in either time slot, the two classes may be consolidated. Registration begins April 30.
Water Safety Instructor Course
If you're age 17 or older and have strong swimming skills, enroll in this class, held May 14 to 26. Classes will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays. Upon completion you'll be eligible for lessons at Taylor Pool or anywhere American Red Cross lessons are offered. The registration fee is $50 per person. This class is for new instructors, or for those who need to update their certifications.
Rumsey Park tennis courts are open to the public during regular park hours.
Drop-in Tennis Doubles
Stop by the Rumsey Park tennis courts for drop-in doubles from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday nights in June, July and August. There is no charge for this program, and adult players of all abilities are welcome.
Youths and adults of all abilities are invited to register for summer tennis lessons. The classes will be held each Tuesday and Thursday, June 5 through June 21. The class for youths ages 6 to 10 will meet from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., and youths ages 11 and up will meet from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Beginner adults will meet from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., and intermediate-advanced adults from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Registration is $20 per person and begins May 7. Class sizes are limited to eight, so reserve a spot today.
Men's and women's softball
Registration for men's and women's softball leagues will be held May 29 through June 9. Recreation and competitive divisions will be offered to both men and women as long as a minimum of four teams sign up for each division. The fee is $250 per team. Season begins June 26.
Monsoon 5K Fitness Walk/Run
This 3.1-mile course is fun for runners, walkers and even rollerbladers. The race begins at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3. Entry fee is $10 for those who pre-register, and $15 after 5 p.m., Aug. 2. All pre-registered participants will receive a souvenir race shirt.
July Fourth Fun Day, Concert and Fireworks Show: The July Fourth Family Fun Day will take place from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Green Valley Park amphitheater. This event features games, gunnysack races, tug-o-war and other activities for all ages, youth to adults. Then unpack your picnic basket and sit back and enjoy live family entertainment by Western Bred from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., followed by a patriotic traditional fireworks display over Green Valley Lake. Shuttle buses will be provided. Call 474-5242 for more information.
GVP fishing regulations
The Green Valley Park lakes are included in the Arizona Game and Fish Urban Fishing Program. An urban fishing license is required for all individuals ages 14 and older. Fishing licenses are available where regular fishing permits are sold. Bag limits are four fish per day; or two for children under 14. The lake is stocked with trout from October through May.
Ramada and field reservations can be made through the parks and recreation office at Green Valley Park, 474-5242. Prices vary for each facility.
Green Valley Park ramadas are available on a first-come, first-served basis for groups of less than 25 people. Permits are required for larger groups. Reservations are for Rumsey Park only and need to be made at least seven days in advance. No refunds will be offered. However, credits will be issued for those who submit cancellation notice to the parks and recreation office at least 15 days prior to the date reserved for the facility.
