Four Rim country youngsters Nicole Geavaras, Ciara Wholly, Amy Wilcox and Keith Shelton have qualified for Arizona state championship finals in soccer and football.
Geavaras and Wholly will be participating in Elk Soccer Shoot-Out state championships Nov. 11 in Phoenix.
Wilcox and Shelton qualified for the state finals in the Punt, Pass and Kick contest that takes place Nov. 18 in Sun Devil Stadium. That event will be held just before kickoff of an Arizona Cardinals football game.
For Geavaras and Wholly, the trip to state began early this fall when both won their age group competition at the Payson Elks Soccer Shoot. Geavaras participated in the girls 10- to 11-year old group and Wholly in the girls 12- to 13-year old category. Both are students at Rim Country Middle School.
The victory in Payson qualified the pair for the regional competition held last week in Sedona.
More victories in Sedona set the stage for the upcoming state showdown.
Should the girls emerge victorious in Phoenix, they would qualify for the national championships to be held next month in Las Vegas, Nev.
For Wilcox and Shelton, the ascension to state began last summer when both won age-group championships in the local Punt, Pass and Kick competition.
Wilcox, a three-time local winner, participated in the girls 14- to 15-year group. Shelton was entered in the boys 14- to 15-year category.
Wilcox is a student at Payson High and Shelton attends RCMS.
After winning the Rim country Punt, Pass and Kick crowns, the two advanced to the regional competition last Saturday in Walkup Dome on the campus of Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff.
There, the two again won their age/sex group crowns to earn the right to compete for state honors.
Victories in the state competition would propel the teens into the national championships to be held in January 2002.
