Members of the Lady Longhorns soccer team gathered last week for the transitional awards ceremony, following a banner season in which the Lady Longhorn soccer team advanced to the Class 3A Arizona State Tournament quarterfinals before being eliminated 3-0 by Camp Verde.
Head coach Linda Gibson was on hand to honor the players and assistant coaches. One of the items on her agenda was to thank assistants Fred Hollobaugh, Kendrick Francis and Jason Schwein for their efforts in helping PHS field both varsity and jayvee girls teams.
On the varsity level, sophomore Jana Knighton was crowned the team's most valuable player. Jenny Cohen was tapped most improved and Amy Wilcox took home the sportsmanship award.
Gibson also announced the players who were chosen to the All-Rim region teams in a voting of head coaches held at the conclusion of the regular season.
Megan Branstetter and LeeAnn Owens were chosen first-team All-Rim.
Knighton and Wilcox were selected to the second team, while Laura Crabtree and Jennifer Plumb earned honorable mention laurels.
Also announced at the ceremony was the results of coaches' voting for the all-state tournament team. The tournament was played over the course of two weekends at Tucson Udall Park.
Owens and Branstetter were both selected to the all-tournament team.
On the PHS junior varsity level, freshman Jessica Coleman was chosen the Lady Horns most valuable player. Annie Wrobleski was tapped most improved and Jami Davies was selected the sportsmanship winner.
