The October 2001 edition of Rocky Mountain Game & Fish magazine featured a nice article entitled "Giant Bull Elks of Arizona."
The article centers on the hunting exploits of Steve Wiley of Tubac and Dan Gorecki of Brooksfield, Wis. Both received permits this fall for the early trophy bull hunt.
After receiving a permit, Wiley hired outfitter Dwayne Adams and guide Ty Goodman to help him stalk a trophy-sized elk in Unit 22 North.
The story details how Wiley and Goodman scouted the area and then escorted Wiley into prime habitat where they'd spotted several bulls. Goodman then bugled in a dandy buck for Wiley to bag. The animal scored 370 points on the Boone and Crockett Club's scoring system.
Along with the story, written by Tony Mandiele, is a good-sized color photo of Wiley and Goodman alongside the trophy elk.
Wiley's selection of Goodman as a hunting guide was a wise choice. He has been hunting all types of game around Payson since he was old enough to carry a rifle.
