Longhorns Suffer 26-6 Loss To St. Johns

The Payson High varsity football team will be on the road today for a gridiron match at Wickenburg with kickoff at 7 p.m.

Payson opened the regular season last Friday against St. Johns and suffered a 26-6 loss to the high desert team.

The Longhorns only score of the game was in the fourth quarter by Waylon Pettet, who kept the game from being a shut-out after a two-yard run.

St. Johns scored in all but the fourth quarter, and was successful in two of their four-point after attempts.

Payson's quarterback Nate Perna completed six of his 10 pass attempts for 79 yards. Levi Armstrong led the Horns in rushing with 78 yards and had 32 yards as a receiver.

Punter Josh Heglie averaged 35 yards on his three attempts.

St. Johns had a strong rushing game with 254 yards versus Payson's 74. There were 16 penalties in the game with both teams having eight each.

Payson's first home game will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, when they host Holbrook.

Homecoming is scheduled for Sept. 28 against Snowflake.
