An early season trip north in the railroad pioneering community of Winslow turned into rough jaunt for the Lady Longhorn volleyball team.
Only the freshman team was able to salvage a victory in the seven games played Sept. 5 in new Winslow High School gymnasium.
The frosh lost the first encounter of the three-game set 11-5, but then won the second 15-2 to set up a rubber match. In the third and decisive showdown, the Bulldog plebes romped 15-6.
In jayvee action, coach Crystal Donaldson's charges absorbed twin 15-12 defeats.
Payson's evening was capped by 15-11 and 15-11 varsity losses to the Dogs.
The Lady Horns "played well as a team," coach Chris Schwind said, "and stayed in the game mentally, but Winslow wore us down."
The coach praised Staci Scholl and Brittany Curtis who "both rotated into the game and played well."
The good news in the losses, Schwind said, is the players are improving every game.
"We hope to peak during regional play," she said.
