Tonto National Forest Offers Reward To Help Catch Roosevelt Vandals

A $500 reward is being offered by the Tonto National Forest for information regarding the vandalism and damage at the Diversion Dam Recreation Site located at the eastern end of Roosevelt Lake, commonly known as the Salt River Arm.

Damage was discovered last Thursday, Tonto Basin District Ranger Gary Smith said.

"This is obviously intentional vandalism," Smith said.

"The rest room was destroyed by fire, and signs and lights were damaged along a walking path."

Tonto damage assessors have not yet completed their assessment of the cost of the damage; however, damage is estimated in excess of $75,000.

In 1992, these facilities were constructed for use by Salt River rafters, fishermen and boaters.

The U.S. Forest Service is offering a reward of up to $500 for information leading to the arrest of the person or people responsible for the intentional vandalism and damage.

Anyone with information should call Forest Service Special Agent Bud Shaver at (602) 225-5309.
