By virtue of winning their age/sex group division at the Payson edition of the Punt, Pass and Kick competition, seven local youths have qualified to participate in the Sectional Championships to be held Nov. 3 in Northern Arizona University Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff.
If any of the locals should emerge victorious there, they would earn the right to compete in the PP&K Team Championships to be held Nov. 18 in Sun Devil Stadium. That event will be held in conjunction with the Arizona Cardinals vs. Detroit Lions football game.
The local winners included Marah Williams, Nicole Geavaras, Amy Wilcox, Jake Sleeper, M.C. Creighton, Bobby Nielson and Shelton Keith.
In the competition, the youngster's efforts in punting, passing and kicking a football are scored for accuracy and distance.
Williams qualified in the girls 8- to 9-year age group with a score of 113 feet 1 inch.
With an effort of 160 feet, 3 inches, Geavaras won among the 10- to 11-year-old girls.
Amy Wilcox, a Payson High School standout in basketball and soccer, put her considerable athletic skills to good use in winning the girl's 14- to 15-year competition. Her winning tally was 202 feet, 1 inch.
Wilcox is a veteran of PP&K competition; she's won the Payson championship for the past four years. Last fall, she captured the sectional crown and advanced to Sun Devil stadium From page 1B
dium where she finished fourth. Wilcox said she was looking forward to the challenge of improving on that showing.
There were no entrants in the 12- to 13-years age group.
In the 8-9-years division, Sleeper won with a tally of 134 feet, 10 inches. Creighton copped the 10- to 11-years category by recording a mark of 209 feet, 9 inches. In the 12- to 13-years division, Nielson recorded an effort of 243 feet, 11 inches.
Keith, an eighth-grade student at Rim Country Middle School, captured the 14- to 15-years competition with a mark of 316 feet, 5 inches.
Keith said his best event is the kick, but he plans on improving his passing and punting before the Flagstaff sectionals roll around.
The local event, which drew more than 50 entrants to Rumsey Park, was sponsored by the Payson Parks and Recreation Department.
According to PP&K officials, a number of former and current NFL players have competed in the event including Dan Mario of the Miami Dolphins and Drew Bledsoe of the New England Patriots.
