Brenna Zumbro threw a 6-0 shut-out for the Lady Longhorns in Friday's game against Blue Ridge.
"Zumbro did a good job striking out 13 batters while giving up on three hits and a walk," coach Will Dunman said.
Payson's offense struck early in the bottom of the first inning, sending five runs across the plate.
"We were aggressive at the plate and on the bases," Dunman said.
With the bases loaded off two hits and an error, Britney Boyes hit a deep line drive to left-center field that cleaned the bases and left her standing on second.
Boyes and Staci Scholl scored the last two runs of the inning off a single by Jennifer Plumb.
Payson struggled at the plate during the next four innings. However, in the bottom of the sixth with two outs, LeeAnne Owens singled, stole second and became the sixth run of the game when Brandi Waugh hit a line drive double-bagger to score Owens.
Waugh had a perfect game at the plate with three singles and a double to lead Payson's offense.
Defensively, the Lady Horns held their ground, allowing only three hits with no errors.
"Overall, this was a solid win," Dunman said. "Every person on the team did their job and worked hard. The defense did not commit one error."
Payson hosts Show Low at 4 p.m. today (Tuesday, April 9). The team with an overall record of 16 wins and 3 losses will play its last two home games on Friday, April 12 against Snowflake (4 p.m.) and Saturday, April 13 against Holbrook (11 a.m.)
