Browning Fishes To First Place

Veteran Rim country angler John Browning hooked up with Flagstaff fisherman Jeff Allen to win first place at the AllStar Bass Team Invitational April 14 at San Carlos Lake.

For the victory, Browning and Allen shared $4,550 in prize money.

According to AllStar spokesman Tom Stiles, the winning duo weighed in five bass that tipped the scales at 19.14 pounds, which included an 8.02-pound largemouth bass.

Clifford Pirch and Reese Randall finished in seventh place at the tournament. The two, who have been fishing partners since their Payson High School days, pocketed $400 for their catch of 12.43 pounds.

Also among the top-10 finishers was Emery McKeen of Payson. He teamed with Tempe resident Maurice Johnson to catch 7.94 pounds, finished 10th overall, and won $250.

In Browning and Allen's victory, the two used spinnerbaits and Texas-rigged worms on points and in coves along the south side of the lake.

Other successful angling choices, Stiles said, was to fish spider jigs and crankbaits near Midway and Mohave points.

The tournament's big fish winner, an 11.52 pounder, was caught on a spinnerbait by the team of Mike Crothers of Chandler and Mike Hudson of Gilbert. Although the two weighed in only three fish, the lunker was enough to propel them to a second place finish with 18.43 pounds.

Stiles said tournament fishing was tough because only two teams caught their limits and about half the field didn't weigh in any fish.

The next AllStar Bass team tournament is May 4 at Lake Pleasant. Call Stiles at (480) 894-2775 for more information.
