Although I agree with most of the outrage expressed in the April 19 editorial on pedophile priests, I have to disagree with the basic premise, i.e., that the priests who have abused children are all pedophiles. Most of them are actually homosexuals, if we are to believe the statistics pouring forth in both the Catholic and the secular media.
A pedophile is one who preys on pre-pubescent children, but the statistics indicate that most of these victims are boys and most of these boys are older than pre-pubescent. The problem then is not one of pedophile priests, but one of homosexual priests.
That the church has covered up these abuses is inexcusable. It is equally inexcusable for outside observers to ignore or cover up the homosexual nature of these crimes against children.
And while we are in the midst of this media feeding frenzy, let's remember that by far the vast majority of our priests are good, honest men, faithful to their vows and the teachings of the church.
