A contingent of seven Payson Pikes swim team members swam to a fifth-place finish at the 22nd Annual Verde Valley Invitational.
Sponsored by the Cottonwood Clippers swim team, the six-team meet Aug. 3 in the Verde Valley showcased 285 young swimmers.
Kayley Hughes paced the Pike charge medaling in three events.
Cameron Romance and Katrina Kueny returned to the Rim country with two medals each.
Ciara Romance and Tina Jackson won two top-10 finishes each.
Cassie Jones and Nerissa Kueny set personal records in the competition.
The largest team at the meet, the Clippers, was represented by 104 swimmers. The Kingman Dolphins sent 69 and the Sedona Swordfish was represented by 64.
Other teams competing included the Camp Verde Crocodiles and the Lake Havasu Stingrays.
During the course of the summer swim season, the Pikes' team members competed on the Town of Payson Parks and Recreation team. According to Payson P&R rules, that team can compete at Taylor Pool only. When the team members opt to travel to away meets, they become known as the Pikes.
