On her first hunt, small or big game, 13-year-old Sami Novak bagged a bull elk that would be a storied prize for the most seasoned of hunters.
The 5x6 bull was taken Nov. 2 the second day of the hunt n Unit 23 near Kohl’s Ranch while Novak was hunting with her father, John.
Using a range finder, John determined that the teen’s shot from a .243 rifle traveled about 296 yards.
The Novaks spotted the elk while glassing a nearby ridge.
“We knew he was in there somewhere, a friend had spotted it earlier,” John said.
Sami and her father plan on having the antlers mounted for display.
Sami was selected to receive the elk tag in an Arizona Game and Fish drawing last summer. Her father also received a tag and downed a bull of his own.
The teenager’s excitement about her first hunting experience has her looking to another adventure.
“We saw a couple of bears in that unit, and that’s open, so we’re thinking about going back,” John said.
