Horns Wrestle With Bronze

Posting 134 points, the Longhorn wrestling team grappled its way to a third-place finish at the Class 3A state championship tournament Feb. 8 and 9 at Phoenix Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

The Longhorns' longtime East region rival, Show Low Cougars, claimed the state title with a tally of 197. The tournament victory also capped an undefeated season for the cats.

Defending state champion Rio Rico took second place with 144 points.

The Longhorns produced two individual state champions brothers Zack and Nathan Lee.

Wrestling in the 145-pound class, Zack, a junior, decisioned Safford's Paul Palma 5-3 in the championship finale. With the win, Zack finished the season undefeated.

Nathan, a freshman, won the 152-pound crown by decisioning Jackson Campbell of Chino Valley 6-2.

The only other two PHS wrestlers to reach the championship round were 135-pound Larry Wilbanks and 210-pound George Coleman both lost by decision.
