Clock Runs Out On Lady Horns

Turn out the lights, the Lady Longhorns state tournament party is over.

A 60-43 quarterfinal loss Wednesday morning to Chandler Catholic Seton put the crimps on the Lady Horns short-lived state revelry.

On Tuesday evening at Flagstaff High School, a 62-36 first-round loss to West region champion Wickenburg doused the Lady Horns' postseason frivolity.

After a low-scoring first half in which the Wranglers built a 22-12 lead, Wickenburg upped the tempo in the final going to easily eliminate the outmanned Longhorns.

The Lady Horns opened state play Tuesday afternoon, also in Flagstaff High gymnasium, against West runner-up Camp Verde.

A convincing 58-35 triumph over CV propelled the Lady Horns into the quarterfinal game played at Northern Arizona University.

For Payson faithful, the chances of reaching the final four at America West, for the first time in the history of the program, looked promising when Payson held a 25-22 lead early in the third quarter.

But the cushion evaporated quickly under Seton's relentless scoring attack and suffocating defense.

All that remains of the 2002 season is the selection of postseason all-stars and the traditional awards ceremonies.

The players selected for honors and the dates of the ceremonies will be announced next week.
