Doris Sturgis Harger, 90, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, in Payson. She was born Oct. 23, 1911, in Montpelier, Ohio.
Mrs. Harger was a longtime newspaper correspondent for several Arizona newspapers including The Arizona Republic, Arizona Daily Star, Douglas Dispatch and the Arizona Range News in Willcox.
After arriving in Payson in 1962, she became editor of the Payson Roundup and also manager of the Payson Chamber of Commerce. An activist in community affairs throughout her career, she was also instrumental in helping the local Tonto Apache Tribe obtain its existing reservation.
She is survived by three daughters, Joanne VanCleve, Dorene Kime and Susan Frangieh; one son, Allen Kime; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph T. Sturgis, and one son, Brian Sturgis.
Inurnment will be at Payson Pioneer Cemetery, with graveside services at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23.
