For the more than 100 anglers who entered the AllStar Bass Couples Tournament held Saturday at Bartlett Lake, fishing was about as much fun as a Mike Tyson weigh-in.
Only four teams caught a six-fish limit and 13 pairs didn't catch a single bass.
"Fishing was tough," AllStar spokesman Harry Morgan said.
One team that did manage to salvage a bit of luck was Jake and Heidi Randall of Pine. The two weighed in a 5.05-pound large mouth bass that won the Big Fish title of the tournament. The lunker was caught on a drop-shot worm near the dam, Morgan said. The Randalls finished ninth in the overall standings with 8.23 pounds and received $795 in prize money.
Top honors and $1,750 went to the rookie fishing team of Julie King and Brian Daniels, both of Phoenix. Their limit tipped the scales at 13.31 pounds. Their largest fish was a 3.32 pounder.
According to Morgan, the couple fished spider jigs and crankbaits on rocky banks and in small coves in five to 18 feet of water in the Yellow Cliffs.
The next AllStar Bass couples tournament is March 30 at Lake Pleasant, instead of March 23 as originally scheduled.
