Eight community all-star teams from around northern Arizona are set to compete in the Little League Area One Tournament that begins today (Friday) in Payson.
The postseason fray began at 10 a.m. on the Payson High School softball field with the Payson All-Stars taking on Flagstaff Continental.
First-round action continues at 1 p.m. today, with Flagstaff Mount Elden taking on Page. At 5 p.m., Winslow plays Coconino. The opening round wraps up at 8 p.m. with Tuba City challenging Flagstaff.
A total of 13 games will be played in the double-elimination format.
The championship game in the winners bracket is slated for 8 p.m. July 8.
However, the loser of that game will play the once beaten team that emerges from the losers bracket for the right to advance to the district tournament. That game is slated for 8 p.m. July 10.
Each area tournament from around the state sends two teams to the district tournament. District tournaments will be held at Round Valley (9- to 10-year-olds), Flagstaff Mount Elden (11- to 12-year-olds) and Snowflake (13- to 14-year-olds). The dates will be announced next week.
A single champion from the district games will advance to the Arizona State Little League championships later this summer. Winners there qualify for the world tournament.
Admission to the Payson area tournament is free and spectators are welcome.
Payson Little League will operate a snack bar at all the games that will offer hamburgers, hot dogs, candy, popcorn and drinks. Also souvenir T-shirts will be on sale for $14.
Tom Lawson will serve as Little League tournament director.
