Prop. 202 Contains A 'Poison Pill'

The report of the gaming initiative, which will become Proposition 202, was most interesting as reported in Friday's Roundup.

However, Hubert Nanty, of the Tribe's gaming office, left out an important section in the initiative: if the state law is changed or interpreted to permit any expansion of gambling off the reservation, then unlimited casino gambling would be permitted by the tribes with the state's take dropping to less than 1 percent.

Given the zigzag track record of the state and federal courts concerning this complicated subject, and the feet-in-cement approach to difficult problems of our state Legislature, I suggest Proposition 202, while the best of the three propositions, contains the above "poison pill," and should be rejected by the voters along with the other two.
