Ernest Warren Chilson, 86, died June 2, 2002 in Flagstaff. He was born in 1915.
Ernest was raised in Payson, graduated from Winslow High School and Phoenix College. He married Evelyn Back of Camp Verde and together they managed the Bar T Bar Ranch, located in the Tonto Basin, on the Mogollon Rim near Long Valley, and later, near Winslow. A partner in the ranch, he served as its manager from 1942 until his retirement. He was president of Meteor Crater Enterprises, Inc. from 1955 to 1993.
Mr. Chilson was president of the Arizona Cattle Growers' Association, the Northern Arizona Cattlemens' Association, and a founding member of the Arizona Cattle Industry Research and Education Foundation. He was awarded the American Society of Range Management "Range Management Man of the Year" and in 1998, was the Arizona Cattle Growers' "Cattleman of the Year."
He was a charter member of the Arizona 4-H Youth Foundation and was awarded the UA Cooperative Extension Service "Extensionist of the Year."
A charter member of both the Arizona Oil and Gas Conservation Commission and the Arizona Water Resources Committee, Mr. Chilson also served on the Arizona Power Authority.
Mr. Chilson was recently recognized by the Elks Lodge in Flagstaff as having the most years of membership, and has been a member of the Flagstaff Sheriff's Posse since 1940.
Survivors include his daughter, Judy Prosser and husband, Robert; and grandchildren, Spencer and Warren Prosser.
A memorial service will held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 15 at the Federated Community Church, 400 W. Aspen in Flagstaff.
