G & J's Kajun Kove Seafood was supposed to open in the south end of the Swiss Village shopping center last December, and the New China Buffet was slated to turn the old JB's Restaurant building at the Beeline-Highway 260 intersection into an all-you-can-eatery in April.

Neither restaurant opened due to a combination of problems with the town of Payson's building codes (G & J's) and personal matters (New China).

Both enterprises finally flung open their doors within this week.

G & J's Kajun Kove Seafood

"It feels wondermous," said G & J's co-owner Jason Keith, inventing a new word as he sat at one of his restaurant's tables surrounded by taste-testing diners hours after his Wednesday opening.

Set in the building which once housed the Bright Ideas gift shop, G & J's Kajun Kove Seafood is a combination fast-seafood restaurant and fish market.

The eat-in/take out menu features fish, shrimp and oyster baskets with chips ($6.96 to $7.50), or in "po' boy" sandwiches ($5.95); and a variety of children's meals ($3.95).

Regularly offered specials will include catfish and crawfish dishes; various gumbos, jambalayas, ettouffees, and a host of other New Orleans favorites which are for the moment, anyway obscure to most Arizona mountainfolk.

G & J's Kajun Kove Seafood is open Mondays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m., and it is closed on Sundays. For more information, call 468-0690.

The New China Buffet

The New China Buffet, which opened yesterday (Thursday), will regularly offer a variety of 40 different foods in addition to a salad bar, according to owner Zhou Xiang Ni whose family owns and operates three same-named, all-you-can-eat restaurants in the Valley.

The 120-seat restaurant's all-inclusive, per-person charge for lunch is $5.99, and dinner which includes crab legs is $8.99. Children under three years of age eat for free, and senior citizens over 60 are given a 10-percent discount.

To celebrate the week of its grand opening, Ni said, patrons of all ages will receive a 10-percent discount on their lunch and dinner bills until next Thursday, June 20.

The New China Buffet is open Mondays through Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. until 10:30 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 10:30 p.m.; and Sundays from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m.
