Tonto Apaches Re-Elect 2 Members To Council

The Tonto Apaches have re-elected two sitting council members to new two-year terms.

David (Kenny) Davis and Calvin Johnson were re-elected to the council June 8.

The two men led a field of five candidates. Also seeking election to the council were Nathaniel Campbell, Wally Davis Jr., and Ernie Engle.

Campbell, spokesman for the tribal council, and its court administrator, said about 40 of the 62 registered voters on the reservation participated in the election.

The Tonto Apache Tribe has only 110 enrolled members. Campbell said the 62 registered voters represent its adult population, with the remainder all under 18.

Johnson has served two prior terms, part of one term and then the full term he just completed. With his re-election, he is starting his fourth year on the tribal council.

Davis was the youngest member of the tribe ever elected, successfully running for office at the age of 18. Johnson was only 19 when he was first appointed to the council.

Davis said he has served a total of six-and-a-half years on the council.

Judge Tao Etpison officiated at swearing-in ceremonies June 15, which were opened with a prayer by Tribal Elder Polly Davis, mother of Councilman Kenny Davis.
