Longhorn baseball coach Teddy Pettet's team is off to its best start in his 13 years at the helm of the program.
That jump start included winning six consecutive games while participating Feb.28 to March 3 at the Mohave Valley Thunderbird Invitational Tournament.
"It's nice to be 6-0," he said. "We've never done that before, but the tournament gave us a chance to play a lot of kids in different positions and learn more about our team."
The Longhorns opened the fray with a 5-3 victory over Chino Valley and followed it up the same day with an 11-0 thumping of Monument Valley.
The Horns continued to roll, beating Southwest (Calif.) 4-0, Chinle 13-3 and East region rival Round Valley 15-5.
In the tournament finale, Payson ran past Class 4A Flagstaff Sinagua 8-3.
The Horns return to tournament play tomorrow (Wednesday) in the Miami Invitational. During the course of the four-day tournament, the Horns will play five games.
