With spring break coming to an end, the Longhorn junior varsity golf team is focusing its attention on an upcoming 9-hole tournament against an East region field.
The showdown, April 10 at Pinetop Country Club, also has drawn teams representing North region members Winslow and Holbrook.
The event will be conducted on a "play five, keep four" scores format.
Horn junior varsity coach Denny Morse continues to tinker with his lineup, but says he will probably start the team members who have seen most of the playing time this season.
In the No. 1 slot could be freshman Allan McDermott, who saw varsity action March 21 at Phoenix Raven course.
The second position on the roster might go to sophomore J.R. Szabo and the third to Troy Marrs.
Tyler Danielson and Merel Weisser are expected to fill the four and five slots.
The team tuned up for the all-important East showdown at a six-team tournament March 20 in Holbrook. Because several of the players were vacationing on spring break, only four athletes participated in the "play five, keep four" format.
"That put us at a disadvantage," Morse said.
With a tally of 195 the undermanned Horns finished fourth behind Winslow (178), Snowflake (182) and Show Low (189).
Marrs led the Payson charge in Roadrunner land, finishing with 42. Trailing were Weisser (46), Tyler Danielson (53) and Thomas Borkowski (54).
