Richard M. Van Vorhees, 79, of Payson, died March 14, 2002 in Torrance, Calif. He was born Aug. 28, 1922 in Rochester, Minn.
Mr. Van Vorhees served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Wainright from 1940 to 1945. He was wounded in the South Pacific and received two Purple Hearts. He later did missionary work with United Indian Missions - Broken Arrow Bible Camp. He also served as hospital chaplain for First Southern Baptist Church of Payson.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Marjorie, of Payson and Torrance; daughter Janet Sumpter and her husband Jonathan Sumpter of Torrance, Calif.; niece Debra of California; two sisters, Nancy and Maxine of Michigan; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services were held in California.
