For longtime Payson Men's Golf Association member Roland Kruse, the four-man best ball tournament May 1 at the Payson Golf Course was the opportunity to shine.
In a blind draw to fill out a foursome, Kruse found himself a member of both the first- and third-place finishing teams.
On the gold-medal squad that carded a 116, Kruse was teamed with Don Castleman, Doug Talbot and Jim Dalgleish.
The bronze-medal foursome of Dick Romig, Herb Sherman, Victor Kostecki and Kruse finished at 120.
With a tally of 118, Jack Greenshield, John Peel, Harold Heckathorn and Ross Robertson was second.
In the closest-to-the-pin competition, John Pauley pocketed prize money on holes No. 2 and 5.
On No. 2, he finished 2 feet, 9 inches shy of the pin. His tee shot on No. 5 left him 8 feet, 2 inches away.
Other winners were Jim Dalgleish (No. 8; 8 feet, 2 inches), Frank Szakal (No. 14, 8 feet, 4 inches) and Don Gyde (No. 17; 5 feet, 10 inches).
The PMGA members return to action tomorrow (Wednesday) in the associations' annual best-ball championship tournament.
The fray wraps up with a second 18 holes of play May 15.
Also on the agenda is an interclub meet May 22 at Payson Golf Course. Associations from Prescott, Beaver Creek and Quailwood will be playing in the meet.
