Whetten, Cassuto Lead Horns To State

Although the Longhorn boys track and field team didn't qualify enough athletes at the East championships to be a state title threat, Payson will take several standouts to the 3A finals.

Among those who will be on hand when the state meet opens today (Friday) at Mesa Mountain View are high jumper Blake Whetten and pole vaulter Alex Cassuto. Both qualified for the state showdown by winning their events at the East championships May 3 and 4 in Lakeside.

Cassuto won the vault with an effort of 13 feet 6 inches. Whetten claimed the high jump title by clearing 6 feet 6 inches.

As a team, the Longhorns (126 1/2 points) finished third in the East standings behind runner-up Blue Ridge (139) and East champ Snowflake (171 1/2).

Joining Whetten and Cassuto at state will be the athletes who finished in the top four at the East finals.

Following a noon start today, state track and field action continues Saturday before wrapping up in the late evening hours with finals in all running events.
