Blake Whetten's gold medal jump of 6 feet, 5 inches paced the Longhorn boys track team to a tie for ninth place at the 3A Boys State Track and Field Meet May 10 and 11 at Mesa Mountain View High School.
The 10 team points earned by Whetten's victory upped the Horn tally to 27 which was good enough to deadknot the Longhorns with Sedona.
With 106 points, Rio Rico claimed the state title. Winslow (51) was second and Safford (49) third.
In winning the state high jump title with a leap that was one inch shy of his personal record of 6 feet, 6 inches Whetten outdueled runner-up Don Koestner of Chandler Seton and Show Low's Jason Stock. Both cleared 6 feet, 4 inches.
Although the Horns didn't pick up any other gold medals, the team did receive a bronze-medal effort from junior Chris Donaldson in the 300-meter hurdles.
Turning in a clocking of 40.79, Donaldson was hot on the spikes of event champion Mark Lemieux (40.15) and runner-up Jose Gonzalez (40.42). Lemieux is from Queen Creek and Gonzalez is a student at Coolidge.
The meet record in the event of 37.95 - set in 1988 - is held by former Longhorn track and field star Todd Reid.
