McKenzie Lewis of Fountain Hills Middle School will represent Arizona at the National History Day competition in Washington, D.C. next month.

Lewis, 12, is the granddaughter of Joanne and Bill Jones of Payson, and the youngest daughter of 1972 Payson High School graduates Cindy (Jones Miller) and John Lewis. Cindy Lewis is also a former teacher for Payson schools.

The state contest required contestants to make a presentation on a person, people or event that changed the course of history.

The Fountain Hills student made a presentation on how the Yavapai-Apache stopped the Federal government from building Orme Dam and flooding their land. Lewis will compete at the junior level in the national contest in June.
