Robert D. Benner, 78, died May 19, in Phoenix. He was born Feb. 25, 1924, in Los Angeles, Calif.
Benner was raised on a farm near Clovis, N.M., and joined the Army in January, 1943. He was stationed in Iwo Jima until his honorable discharge in December 1945.
The following year, Benner moved to Phoenix and married Anna Jo Read. He worked for U.S. West until 1982, and retired to Payson to pursue his love of fishing, woodworking, airplanes and his grandchildren.
He is survived by his son, Phillip Benner and wife, Gale; daughters, Patricia Johnson, Nancy Lange, Barbara Troyky and husband Bart, Janet Eakins and husband Keith; 16 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, sister Faye Bradbury and brother Harold Benner.
Services will be held Wednesday, May 29, at Larkspur Christian Church 3302 W. Larkspur in Phoenix.
