Forest Service Pleased, Relieved After Memorial Day Weekend

The fire officers of the Payson Ranger District are feeling a lot of relief this week. There were no fires anywhere in the half-million acres of the Tonto National Forest monitored by the Payson Ranger District over the holiday weekend.

"We could not be more pleased," District Fire Prevention Officer Gary Roberts said.

He said everyone in his department wanted to express their sincere appreciation to the Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce, area businesses and residents for all their support.

"It is a massive undertaking to close the forest," Roberts said.

Conditions are still the worst seen since records have been kept. Roberts said furniture has more moisture content than the trees in the forest right now.
