Local Painter Takes Art Classes On The Road

This summer, Payson watercolor artist and nationally-known teacher Claudette Barker will hold painting workshops in the Arizona town of Greer.

Participants from all over the country are expected to attend the five- and three-day workshops, Barker said.

"I chose Greer just because the White Mountains are such a scenic place to paint, and I thought it would provide a nice, relaxing atmosphere," said Barker, a 25-year professional.

Barker has taught workshops in Florida, Michigan, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri and Arizona.

"There's just so much beauty and so many rustic buildings to paint, it's the ideal location."

Greer's landscapes will play a central role in the "plein air" workshop, Barker said.

"We'll meet at various outdoor locations each morning where I will offer painting demonstrations, individual painting time and positive critique."

The workshop is from July 29 through Aug. 2.

The cost for the five-day schedule is $275, and $175 for the three-day schedule. Lodging at Cattle Kate's Lodge in Greer has been discounted from $95 to $70 per night for workshop participants.

Greer is located about 45 miles from Show Low, south of Highway 260.
