Soccer Teams In Dream Tourney

A soccer fan's dream awaits Longhorn faithful Friday afternoon in Tucson.

Both Payson High School soccer teams are participating in the final four of the Arizona state tournaments.

The Longhorn boys soccer team won first- and second-round games at the Arizona State Tournament held last weekend in Tucson. The Horns return to semifinal action at 4 p.m. Nov. 8, also in Tucson. In a quarterfinal win over Desert Christian, Josh Lammers (13), Andrew Karlowski (23) and PHS goalie Mark Hillegas battle for a loose ball.

At 4 p.m. on Udall Park's West field, coach Roger Wholly's Horns take on Show Low. At the same start time on the East field, the Lady Longhorns challenge Camp Verde.

According to Wholly, fans of both PHS teams could stand between the two fields and have the opportunity to watch both games.

The Lady Longhorns advanced to the semifinals by virtue of a 1-0 state opening round win over Chino Valley. That game was played Nov. 2 at Udall Park.

The boys team nailed down a slot in the final four by whipping Lourdes Catholic Nov. 1 at Udall. The following day, Payson edged Tucson Desert Christian 3-1.

The girls state championship game will be played Nov. 9 at Udall. The time has not yet been determined.

The boys championship is set for 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9 at Udall.
