One juvenile died and eight others were seriously injured in a head-on collision on Highway 260 yesterday.
The noontime accident at milepost 280.7 took place after westbound driver Juanito Elizondo, 49, of Tolleson, lost control of his vehicle, traveled into the eastbound lane, and struck the second vehicle “basically head-on,” according to Department of Public Safety Officer Tony McDaniel.
The driver of the car that was struck, 22-year-old Rikki Harvey of Phoenix, was carrying three juvenile passengers, one of whom was declared dead at the scene.
The identity of the juvenile was withheld pending notification of family.
There were five juvenile passengers in Elizondo’s vehicle.
Two of the accident’s eight survivors suffered serious head and internal injuries, McDaniel said. Four were transported by ambulance to Payson Regional Medical Center, and three helicopters transported the other passengers to Good Samaritan Hospital, John C. Lincoln Hospital North and Maricopa County Hospital in the Valley.
